First Grade: March 5-9

I hope you all enjoyed your last weekend. Please read all the way to the bottom of this blog. There is important information about the following weeks.

Let me start by saying that I will be out of the school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I will be traveling to San Pedro Sula to get some professional development in a Teacher´s Conference. In my absence the students will remain with a substitute teacher.

We would like to invite our lovely daddies to a Father´s Day breakfast on Friday, March 16^th. Before having breakfast, the children will perform a Mexican song. Children should come dressed with black pants (boys) or black skirts (girls), a formal white shirt and a Mexican hat. We hope to see all our Daddies attend!

Believe it or not, Easter is just right around the corner. We are requesting Lps. 300 to be sent to school by Monday, March 12^th. This money will be used as follows:

This week your child will be reviewing all the Word Walls with various chants and activities. The spelling challenge will be on Friday, March 9^th. The five new words that we will be introducing this week are:

We are going to finish reading the stories from Owl at Home. We are going to be predicting, identifying the setting and talking about Character Traits. We will tally our favorite story.

Last week, the children enjoyed learning about Owls. They learned a variety of facts, which the students included in their writing pieces. For this week, we will be learning about Dr. Seuss and a little bit about his biography. They are going to be exposed to a variety of his books and children will by identifying the rhyming words they find in each one. The children will write an informative piece about all the facts they will be learning. If you happen to have any books about Dr. Seuss send them over to school with your child´s name written on it.

We are going to continue learning about comparing numbers. Last week we reviewed the signs of less than, greater than, and equal to.

On Monday, March 5^th the children will be taking home an empty booklet in which they will have the chance to become authors and illustrators. They will create their own main character and write a 10 page story that goes along with their characters. Each page should have only one to two sentences. These sentences need to have rhyming words. For example,

Page 1: The pig is wearing a wig. The big wig is pink. Page 2:The pig meets the dragon that is pulling a wagon.

These books should be turned in back to school on Friday, April 6^th. The children will be reading their books to each other and also to other students from other grades. Be creative and remember that imagination can take you everywhere!

Following this celebration during the week of March 12^th – March 16^th we will have a different activity every day. These activities should be done at home and brought to school on the corresponding date. I am including the links of the books if you wish to watch them with your child at home.
