I hope everyone had a nice long
weekend!
I would like to
remind all parents that your child will be taking his/her first MAP assessment
tomorrow, Tuesday, January 21st. Please make sure that your child gets
plenty of sleep Monday night, eats a healthy breakfast and comes to school with
water. For our new parents, there is information about the MAP assessments on
the right hand side of the blog, under the 'Pages' heading.
100 Days of School
is just around the corner. I ask that every first grader wear 100 of something
or make a t-shirt with 100 things stuck to it. I would like all the students to
wear their item (s) to school for the 100 Days Celebration on Wednesday,
January 29th.
Last, I would like
your help. If you have any American coins and would like to donate them, I would
greatly appreciate it. Pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters are what we need.
We will be using the coins to skip count in the money unit.
This week your
child will inquire into the following:
Language
Arts
Phonics- This
week's words are live, me,
back, most, give. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing
older words through various chants and activities.
Reading-The
class will begin reading Frog and
Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel. We will be identifying the problem of
the story, continue exploring summarizing, retelling a text in their own
words, and answering questions about key details in the text. You can help your
child with these skills by asking him/her to retell a page of a story or the
entire story in his/her own words after reading it.
Writing- Your
child will be writing an informative piece about his/her favorite toy. The
students will work through the entire writing process; beginning with brainstorming,
making an organizational map, rough draft, editing and revising, final draft,
and sharing.
Math- The
class will continue practicing skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, and solving a
problem by finding patterns in tables. Please help your child with skip
counting by asking them to count nightly. Your child is expected to be able to
count to 120 forward and back by 1s, and forward to 100 by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Science- This
week's science class will be spent investigating solids in water, and testing
solids with magnets
