Week 24 January 27th -30th

 Dear Parents,

 

I hope everyone had a nice great weekend!

 

Your child will be taking his/her second MAP assessment tomorrow, Monday, January 27th and his/her third one on Tuesday, January 28th. The students will then have one more test left and that will be next Tuesday, February 4th .Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep, eats a healthy breakfast and comes to school with water.

 

 

If your child has not started making his/her 100 Day of School shirt/collections of things to wear, please have them start this week. The 100 Days of School celebration is this Wednesday, January 30th, and we ask that all children come dressed in their shirt or wearing 100 items. Your child does not also need a lunch. This is also a half day. All students will be dismissed at 11:45am.

 

We are still collecting American change. If you would like to donate spare change, we would be very grateful.

 

 
 
 
 
 
This coming Tuesday and Wednesday we will be having birthday celebrations during lunchtime and snack time. A pizza lunch, beverages and cake will be provided for the students on Tuesday January 28th.

Wednesday January 29th we will be having beverages and cake during snack time.


 

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
This week your child will inquire into the following:

 

Language Arts 

Working With Words-  This week's words are very, after, things, our,  and just. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.

Reading-The class will continue reading Toad and Frog All Year. We will explore new vocabulary words, and story comprehension.

 Writing- Your child will be beginning to write an informative narrative about their favorite toy (No electronic toys). We will first learn about adjectives or “sparkling words” and how they make our writing better. The students will work through the entire writing process; brainstorming, mapping, rough draft, edit and revising, and final draft / presenting to peers. The students will include a topic sentence, 4-6 sentences (the body), and a closing sentence.

Math- The class will begin Chapter 8Place Value. We will also continue to practice our skip counting. I will be asking students this week to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s up to 120.

Science- This week's science class will be spent investigating the properties of liquids.

100 Days of School- Wednesday, January 29th

Early Dismissal- 11:45 am on Wednesday, January 29th

MAP TESTING – This is week two of our second MAP testing session for this school year.

 

CHOIR PARENTS – On Monday, February 3, at 3:15 p.m., there will be a mandatory meeting in the school Library for parents of all Choir students who are planning to travel to New York City in June 2014 to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. Information will be given concerning the trip and payments needed, and Important decisions about the trip will be taken. We need at least one parent for each Choir student to attend this meeting.

 

SCHOLASTIC BOOKS! - This month your child(ren) will have the opportunity to purchase books through the International Scholastic Book Clubs.  This is an optional activity offered by the school, in case you want to motivate your child to read at home and to increase their own library.  With your purchase, our library will accumulate points to redeem for more books for the benefit of your children in our school. Order forms and catalogues were sent home on Friday. The final date to purchase the books online is February 10. The books will arrive at the school in one single delivery, and we will distribute them to the students according to their orders, approximately three weeks after the purchase due date. FROM THE DPTO – PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS – The DPTO has been working very hard to organize the traditional Movie Event for Discovery School families. This year, it will take place at NOVACENTRO on Sunday, February 9 at 11:00 a.m. for the presentation of THE LEGO MOVIE
