Week 22 January 13th -17th

January 13, 2014

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend!
Second quarter report cards will be going home this Friday, January 17th. Parent/teacher conferences will be held the same day in the afternoon. This will be a half day for students. Conferences will be held on a need to see basis. If you would like to schedule a conference please let me know.

Please note that Monday, January 20th, is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there is no school on that day.

I would like your help. If you have any American coins and would like to donate them, I would greatly appreciate it. Pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters are what we need. We will be using the coins to skip count in our money unit.

Last, MAP testing will be starting Tuesday, January 21st. The students will do the Math MAP first and the Reading Map assessment will take place the following week. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep the night before, eat a health breakfast that morning and come to school with water. For my new parents, there is information about the MAP assessments on the right hand side of the blog, under the 'Pages' heading.

This week your child will inquire into the following:

Language Arts
Working With Words- This week's words are years, place, know, work, and little. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.

Reading-The class will continue learning about Martin Luther King Jr. The class will read and answer questions about key details in a text.

Writing- Your child will be writing an informative piece about Martin Luther King Jr. The paragraph will contain a  central idea and 3-4 supporting details. T

Math- The class will be introduced to place value (tens and ones), estimating using groups of 10, using data from a graph and skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s up to 100. Your child would benefit from reviewing numbers up to 100 daily. You can ask your child what is 1 more/less, 2 more/less, and/or 3 more/less than a given number, to start counting either up or down from a given number and to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s from 0 or from a given number.
