Week 21 January 6th - 10th

January 6,2014

Dear Parents,
I hope your holidays were filled with joy and happiness!
It is wonderful to see everyone back at school! Please remind your child that he/she is returning back to school and that means that he/she must turn his/her 'thinking switch' on; follow classroom and school rules and bring his/her folder to school each day with his/her completed homework. I also all know how hard it is to wake up early again after a long holiday so I would like to remind all parents the importance of having your child go to sleep earlier on school days and having a healthy breakfast before school each morning.

Second quarter report cards will be going home Friday, January 17th. Parent/teacher conferences will be held the same day in the afternoon. This will be a half day for students. Conferences will be held on a need to see basis. If you would like to schedule a conference please let me know.

This week your child will inquire into the following:

Language Arts
Working With Words- Your child will be reviewing all the Word Wall Words this week. There will be no spelling challenge
Reading-The class will be reading The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper. We will be identifying the main idea of the story. We will discuss New Year's resolutions. The class will also begin learning about Martin Luther King.
.
Writing- Your child will be writing a personal narrative about their holidays. We will begin to talk about ideas and organization in their writing. This is part of the 6+1 Writing Traits.
Math- The class will be starting Chapter 7 this week. This chapter is dedicated to numbers up to 100. Your child will be learning how to count in both ordinal and cardinal ways and exploring place value.
Please send in a bag of M&M’s or Skittles for a math activity we will be doing on Friday. Each student needs to have their own bag of candy.
