Week 36-May 6th-10th


Dear Parents,

We hope everyone had a nice weekend!
We would like to remind all parents and students that the last MAP assessments will start tomorrow. The first graders will be having 2 math MAP tests this week; one tomorrow, May 6th, and the second one
Friday, May 10th. Please make sure that your child comes to school well rested and fed. There are still a number of students who do not eat breakfast every morning. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and no student school come to school hungry.
The Chronicles of Discovery Gala (a middle and high school event) and the Discovery Zone 4 Summer Camp are back. To find out more about these exciting events please see the Administration blog.
This week, your child will be inquiring into the following:

Language Arts
Phonics- Your child will be starting to review all the words taught earlier this year through various chants and activities. On Fridays, the students will be using the words they reviewed to spell new words and/or be asked to write sentences made from the words on the Word Wall.
Reading- The class will be reading information texts and retelling the information learned in their own words.
Writing- The students will be brainstorming ideas about settings and starting to write their own narratives this week.

Math- The class will be reviewing related facts, fact families, and learning various mental math strategies for subtraction. Please review the double facts, as well the 10 facts with your child daily. These facts will help your child with mental math. Also, your child would benefit from practicing the following skills on IXL- Addition Skill Builders- All, and Subtraction-D3-D10

Science- Your child will be starting the last science unit this month. He/she will inquire into living and non-living things, and the different features that plants have that allow them to survive.

Homework

Monday

Reading-Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log.
Math- Using Related Facts worksheet
Phonics- Word Sorting activity-long E

Tuesday
Reading-Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log.
Math- Fact Family worksheet
Science- Sorting Living and Non-Living Things activity

Wednesday
Reading-Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log
                   - Using the internet, personal knowledge, and/or books, draw, write, and/or past pictures of animals that hatch from eggs (they must be different than the animals learned in class)
Math- Using Addition to Subtract worksheet


Thursday
Reading-Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log.
Math- Using 10 to Subtract worksheet
Phonics- Word Sorting activity-long O
