Week 24- February 4th-8th

Dear Parents,

Hope everyone had a great weekend! It looks like spring is finally here!
We would like to send a BIG thank you to all the moms who helped with the 100 Days of School celebration. The children had a wonderful day!
This is the final week for MAP testing. The first graders will be doing their final reading MAP on Tuesday. Please ensure that your child gets plenty of sleep Monday night, eats a healthy breakfast and comes to school with a bottle of water.
Tuesday, February 5th, will be the final day for rose orders (memo was sent home last week) for Valentine's Day. If your child would like to buy a rose for someone special, please make sure that he/she does so by Tuesday. Please bring back the memo, filled out, with the money.
There is a new page listed under the 'Links To Fun Learning Activities' heading on the right had side of this blog called 'Spelling City'. This is a very cool website Ms. Colette discovered which helps children with spelling, vocabulary, sentences and much more! We did not buy a membership yet, however, if you find this site interesting and helpful, and your child enjoys it, please let us know and we will subscribe to it.
Just a reminder that it is important that your child practice his/her math skills on IXL on a weekly basis.
This week, your child will be inquiring into the following:

Language Arts
Phonics-  This week's words are most, very, after, things, our, just, and name. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.
Reading-The class will reviewing beginning-middle-end, characters, and retelling. The students will also be introduced to understanding the theme of a story. Your child will be reviewing and learning the skills above by reading a short chapter book.
Writing- Your child will be publishing his/her piece about a $100. The classes will also be learning correct sentence structure by exploring pronoun agreement.

Math- The class will be starting chapter 8 this week. This chapter is dedicated to place value and number sense. This week, your child will be inquiring into the ones and tens place values, as well as representing numbers in their expanded form. The following skills should be practiced on IXL under the Second Grade math skills- Place Values- M.1, M.4, M.7, M.8, M.9, and M.13 (this skill includes the 100 place value which our children would not have covered yet so your child may need some help with this one)
