Week 23- January 28th- February 1st

Dear Parents,

We hope everyone had a nice great weekend!

Your child will be taking his/her second MAP assessment tomorrow, Monday, January 28th. and his/her third one on Tuesday, January 29th. The students will then have one more test left and that will be next Monday, February 4th.Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep, eats a healthy breakfast and comes to school with water.

If your child has not started making his/her 100 Day of School shirt/collections of things to wear, please have them start this week. The 100 Days of School celebration is this Wednesday, January 30th, and we ask that all children come dressed in their shirt or wearing 100 items. Snack will be provided for your child on this day so he/she does not need to come to school with one. Your child does not also need a lunch. This is also a half day. All students will be dismissed at 11:45am.

We are still collecting American change. If you would like to donate spare change, we would be very grateful.

Furthermore, our children are registered with IXL, a great math website. We ask that all students practise the math skills we suggest and other ones that they feel they need review in or want to explore. If you have lost or not recieved a username and password, please let Ms. Colette or Ms. Magda know.

Last, just to remind all parents that your child is allowed to borrow books from our class library and/or school library if he/she needs too. We also have links on the right hand side of our blog to various reading material.

This week your child will inquire into the following:

Language Arts
Phonics-  This week's words are know, place, years, live, me, back, and give. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.
Reading-The class will explore new vocabulary words, compound words, setting and story comprehension through reading a short chapter book. It would benefit your child to review setting at home. We would like all students to not only tell us where a story takes place but also when; part of day, what season, past/present/future, etc. You can challenge your child by asking him/her how would the story he/she is reading change if the setting changed? Would the characters be different? The story? Why?
Writing- Your child will be beginning to write about $100. The main idea will be, 'I would have so much fun with $100!' The students will be expected to write a couple of sentences based on the main idea. Some students will be asked to write a short paragraph.

Math- The class will be examining ordinal numbers, odd/even, and skip counting. We be asking students this week to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s up to 100. Your child will be finishing chapter 7 this week. It would benefit your child to be practicing his/her math skills on IXL. The skills to review are A.6-A.10, A.12-A.15, and A.17

Science- This week's science class will be spent investigating the properties of liquids.
