Week 21- January 14th- 18th


Dear Parents,

We hope everyone had a relaxing weekend!
To celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Discovery School will be having a special assembly this Friday, January 18th, at 8:00 a.m. in the gym. All parents are welcome to join the celebration which will last about an hour. Please note that Monday, January 21st., is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there is no school on that day.
We would like your help. If you have any American coins and would like to donate them, we would greatly appreciate it. Pennies, nickels,dimes and quarters is what we need. We will be using the coins to skip count and in the money unit
Last, MAP testing will be starting Tuesday, January 22nd. The students will be do the Math MAP first and the Reading Map assessment will take place the following week. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep the night before, eat a health breakfast that morning and come to school with water. For our new parents, there is information about the MAP assessments on the right hand side of the blog, under the 'Pages' heading.

This week your child will inquire into the following:

Language Arts 
Phonics- This week's words are get, made, come, may, and part. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.
Reading-The class will continue learning about reading with expression and the meaning of a main character. Your child will also inquire into relating story events to personal experience.
Writing- Your child will be learning how to write a short paragraph with a central idea and 2-3 supporting details. These paragraphs will be about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Math- The class will be introduced to place value (tens and ones), estimating using groups of 10, using data from a graph and skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s up to 100. Your child would benefit from reviewing numbers up to 100 daily. You can ask your child what is 1 more/less, 2 more/less, and/or 3 more/less than a given number, to start counting either up or down from a given number and to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s from 0 or from a given number.

Theme- This week's theme class will be spent on learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Your child will be reading a short text about his dream, watching a short BrainPop Jr. video and listening to a book about him. The students will also be drawing/writing about their 'Dream' for the world.

Monday

Reading-Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log.
Math- Counting with Groups of 10 and Leftover 1s worksheet
Phonics- Fill in the blanks worksheet


Tuesday 
Reading-Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log.
Math- Estimating with Groups of 10 worksheet
Phonics- ABC order activity

Wednesday 
Reading-Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log
Math- Using Data from a Graph worksheet
Phonics- Bake a Cake phonics activity

Thursday 
Reading-Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log.
Math-Before,After, Between worksheet
Phonics- Study for Friday's spelling challenge
