Week 20- January 7th-11th

Dear Parents,

We hope your holidays were filled with joy and happiness!
It is wonderful to see everyone back at school! Please remind your child that he/she is returning back to school and that means that he/she must turn his/her 'thinking switch' on; follow classroom and school rules and bring his/her folder to school each day with his/her completed homework. We also all know how hard it is to wake up early again after a long holiday so we would like to remind all parents the importance of having your child go to sleep earlier on school days and having a healthy breakfast before school each morning.

Second quarter report cards will be going home Friday, January 11th. Parent/teacher conferences will be held the same day in the afternoon. This will be a half day for students.Conferences will be held on a need to see basis. If you would like to schedule a conference please let us know.

This week your child will inquire into the following:

Language Arts
Phonics- Your child will be reviewing all the Word Wall Words this week. There will be no spelling challenge
Reading-The class will be learning about reading with expression and showing their understanding of level appropriate vocabulary words from a selected text. The students will also be reviewing the meaning of main character.
Writing- Your child will be inquiring into plural nouns and quotation marks.Your child will be practicing these skills through locating the nouns in his/her reading text and writing a dialogue between characters from their reading text.

Math- The class will be starting Chapter 7 this week. This chapter is dedicated to numbers up to 100. Your child will be learning how to count in both ordinal and cardinal ways and exploring place value.

Theme- Science- The class will be inquiring into solids and liquids for the next few weeks. The students will be comparing various solids this week and experimenting which solids can roll and which need to be stacked. We decided to continue with science for the first few weeks because our children will take part in the elementary science fair in February  The first graders will be working as a class to perform an experiment and learn about the scientific method. We will provide you all with more information as we get it.
