Week 19- December 5th-9th, 2011

Dear Parents,

Hope everyone had a relaxing weekend and are ready for another fun-filled week! The Christmas holidays are just around the corner and as excited as we all are, please remind your child the importance of coming to school on time and paying attention for the last 9 school days before the break.
The first graders will be having their Christmas Activity Day Thursday, December 15th. We thought it would be fun to have a traditional Christmas morning with the children so we are asking that your child wear his/her pyjamas to school that day. We are also planning a student gift exchange that day. We are asking that each child bring a wrapped gift of no more that 150 Lemps to school. The boys must bring a gift for a boy and the girls a gift for a girl. The children will draw numbers and collect the gift with the corresponding number. There is a small possibility that your child might get his/her own gift but we will do our best to see that that does not happen.
We would like to remind you that the annual Discovery School Song Fest will be held the night of Thursday, December 15th at 6:00 P.M. You child is asked to wear black bottoms with either a white, red, or green top.
This week your child will inquire into the following:
Language Arts
  • Phonics- This week's words are into, time, has, look, two, and more. Students will be learning these words plus reviewing older Word Wall words through various chants and activities. Please remember that there is a spelling challenge each Friday and that it is important that you review these words nightly with your child.
  • Reading-This week your child will be learning how to define unknown vocabulary words through using the book's illustrations as well as learning the problem/solution in a story, its sequence, main character and setting. Your child will be exploring these reading skills by continuing to read Danny and the Dinosaur.
  • Writing- Your child will continue to focus on how to write a complete sentence. This week, your child will be learning more about the subject/verb agreement in a sentence and to recognize what verb sounds correct in standard English usage in order to write a complete sentence.

Math- The class will begin Chapter 5, Geometry and Fractions. The class will focus on Geometry before the holidays. Your child will be learning about plane shapes (triangles, rectangles, circles and squares) and their properties this week.

Theme- Your child will continue inquiring into Comparing and Ordering. He/she will be comparing his/her arm and leg lengths with his/her peers as well as comparing the lengths of various objects in the classroom.
