Week 16, November 14th-18th

Dear Parents,

We hope that everyone had a great weekend! There are a few things we would like to remind all parents.
First, not all students have brought in a wire coat hanger yet. Please have your child bring one to school as soon as possible.
There is no school on Friday, November 18th. For this reason, the spelling challenge will be on Thursday, November 17th.
This week, your child will inquire into the following;

Language Arts
  • Phonics- Students will be reviewing all the sight words that are up on the Word Wall and learning new ones through various chants and activities.
Words for this week:   about, out, many, them, then (there are only 5 words this week because this is a short week)
  • Reading-Your child will continue to read Nate the Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. He/she will continue to work on the reading skill 'Prediciting' and understanding site words and level appropriate vocabulary words from the story. The students are reading this short novel as a class and it is important that your child knows how to follow the text being read with his/her finger. You can practice this skill with your child by asking them to point to the words he/she is reading during his/her reading homework. Your child should be reading up to 10 minutes each night. Please have your child read outloud and listen to them read.
  • Writing-Your child will be continuing constructing proper sentences by using the 3 characteristics of a sentence; 1)A sentence must begin with a capital letter. 2) A sentence must end with an end mark. 3) A sentence must be complete. We are noticing that not all children are confident at writing sentences. Please practice these writing skills daily with your child. You can ask your child to find sentences in books, magazines, and newspapers and tell you why they are correct or incorrect. You can also write a simple sentence that missing a capital letter at the beginning and an end mark and have your child correct it.
Math- The class will be beginning a new chapter this week; Chapter 6-Time. They will be identifying the minute and hour hand, as well as determining which daily activities take more/ less than a minute to complete and knowing the difference between a digital clock and an analog clock. The new math vocabulary words for this week are minute, hour, hour, hand, minute hand, and o'clock. Your child can practice his/her time skills by playing some of the on-line math games under the 'Links' heading.

Theme-Science-The class in continuing to be working on the Weather unit. This week the students will be observing and discussing wind speed and what a thermometer is, measuring the temperature of water, making a rain gauge and observing clouds. You can help your child better understand weather by asking him/her about the weather each day and what they predict the weather will be like the next day. You can also have him/her watch the weather report and/or show him/her the weather reports in the daily newspaper.
