Week 13 October 24th - 28th

Dear Parents,

We hope all of you had a nice relaxing long weekend!

Thanks to all the parents who came for the Student Led Conferences last Friday. We are all looking forward to a very successful second quarter in grade one.



           This Friday, October 28th  we will  celebrate The United Nations Day. Throughout the week the children will be engaging in various activities that will lead up to our school celebration. If you would like to play and learn more about the UN, click on the following links (provided by Amy Robertson):



*****Theme:   Along with the UN Celebration, we will be  learning about the history and purpose of the United Nations. We are also asking our 1st graders to bring in something on Thursday, October 27th to share with the class that represents the country they are from. Students are free to be as creative as they want! They can bring in songs, pictures, clothing, art, food, etc. The students will share what they bring with the class.
 Don’t forget that the 1st graders are working with a pair of Seniors on a cultural project that will be available for parents to purchase on UN Day Celebration on October 28th .




This week the students will be working on the following:

     

Language Arts


Spelling: Students will be  reviewing all the sight words that are up on the Word Wall.Study the words when, your, an, can, said. Spelling Challenge on Friday.

Reading:We will continue working with  Where The Wild Things Are. Students be identifying the main idea of a story.
Reading A-Z books.

Writing: Writing activities based on Where The Wild Things Are.Students will be continuing constructing proper sentences by using the 3 characteristics of a sentence; 1)A sentence must begin with a capital letter. 2) A sentence must end with an end mark. 3) A sentence t be complete.


Math- We will be starting chapter 4. This chapter focuses on subtraction.The clas will be learning how to count back using a number line and using doubles as a way to aide them in subtraction.




Theme: Discussing the history and duties of the United Nations




  • The students will be dismissed at 11:45 on Friday, October.

  •  Thursday, October 26: Each student will share with the classs something that represents the country they are from. Students are free to be as creative as they want! They can bring in songs, pictures, clothing, art, food, etc. The students will share what they bring  with the class.
  • Friday, October 28: UN DAY early dismissal 11:45




  • Monday, October 31Book Character Day students may wear their costume all day, or bring a change of clothes to change into after their presentation. Students DO NOT need to bring a lunch on that day ONLY a morning sanck.
