Jan 15 - Jan 19

We hope you enjoyed your long weekend!

Report Cards went home last Friday. Please remember to send in the envelope signed by you.

This week your child will be reviewing all the Word Wall words with various chants and activities. The spelling challenge will be on Friday, January 19th.

The new words are:

little
work
know
place
years

This week we are going to be finishing our stories of Frog and Toad All Year. We are still missing two stories since this is a chapter book. We are also going to be reading a variety of informative texts.

This whole quarter we are going to devote our reading to Informative Writing. This kind of writing tells about a person, place, thing, event, or idea. It has sentences that give facts, details, examples, or explanations. This week we are going to research about penguins. We will be activating the children´s knowledge about this wonderful bird and writing about what we learned.

We started a unit about Measurement. We have been measuring things around the classroom using non-standard units of measurement such as crayons, markers, paper clips, etc. This week we will be measuring with rulers, yard sticks, measuring tapes. If you happen to have measuring equipment we would appreciate you letting us borrow it from you so it can be displayed on our table.

We are continuing to practice addition and subtraction facts to 20. We want the students to use all the strategies learned instead of only using their fingers. We will be doing mental math of adding ten more to a number and also ten less from a number. You may want to practice this exercise with your child at home. If you say 33, the children should know that 10 more is 43 and that ten less is 23. You may want to try the following online game. https://www.mathgames.com/skill/1.40-ten-more-or-less

J.1     Addition and subtraction - ways to make a number
J.2     Which sign makes the number sentence true?
J.8     Ten more or less
