Ø      Professional Development Wednesday, September 24th Early Dismissal 11:45 .

Ø      General Assembly- Saturday September 27th, 9- 11 am

Last, the first graders will be examining different cultures in a couple of weeks. We would like to invite parents to come to school to speak to the children about your culture in 2 weeks. We would like you to speak about the customs, beliefs, shelter and language of that culture. If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible.

This week your child will be inquiring into the following:

Language Arts

Working With Words- This week's words some, her, would, make, and like. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older ones through various chants and activities.
** You may notice that some or all of the words on your child’s weekly “Spelling Challenge” are not the same as the word list on the blog. This is done on purpose. The weekly “Spelling Challenge” is the application of all the skills and activities your child has learned throughout the week. Our goal is not for the students to simply memorize the words. Our goal is for the students to use these words to help them create new words by applying the spelling patterns learned throughout the week. This will help your child become better spellers and readers. **

Reading- This week, your child will begin a new book, Nate the Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. The students will be inquiring the following reading skills through the book, predicting, creating mental images, setting, character, beginning, middle and end, and identifying the problem. He/she will also be asked to identify the title and author of the book.

Writing- Your child will begin writing his/her first Personal Narrative. The students will work through all of the steps of the writing process. The steps include brainstorming, creating webs/ maps as a pre-writing strategy, writing a rough draft, revising /editing /conferencing with the teacher, and writing their final draft.

Math- Your child will be further inquiring into subtraction and learning how to choose the correct operation when doing problem solving questions.

Social Studies- Your child will continue traveling through Copan Ruins, learning and discussing about Mayan traditions, beliefs, customs, and traditional foods.
