Week 39 May 19th-23rd



Dear Parents,                                                            May,19,2014

I hope everyone had a great weekend!
 
  The first graders will be going on our End of the Year Field Trip / Farewell next Wednesday May 28th. We will be visiting the Zoo at El Picacho, then drive up to La Tigra; hike the short trail enjoy a picnic lunch then return to school. If you are interested in accompanying the class and or riding on the bus with us please let me know as soon as possible. I will be sending a permission slip home later this week.

There are still 2 MAP testing sessions left. Reading Part 1will be taken on Tuesday May, 20th and Reading Part 2 will be taken on Monday May 26th. Please make sure your child comes to school well rested on those days. Also, please make sure that your child comes to school with a water bottle filled with water, not only on MAP days, but every day.

There are a number of important events coming up in the next few weeks:


  • Parent Luncheon on Friday, May 23rd, at 12:20pm in the cafeteria
  • Fly Up Day: The first graders will be visiting second grade on Monday May 26th.
This week, your child will be inquiring into the following:

Language Arts
Working With Words- This week's words are brother, won’t, us, well must, large. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.
Reading-Your child will be reading, retelling, and summarizing informational and fiction texts..
Writing- As an end of the year writing assignment your child will choose which type of writing (narrative, informative, explanatory) he/she would like to do. Your child will follow all the steps in the writing process in order to create his/her final master piece.
Math-We will continue to work on chapter 12 this week. The focus will be on adding and subtracting two digit number without regrouping. It is extremely important that when your child is adding or subtracting 2 -2 digit numbers that they ALWAYS begin ADDING or SUBTRACTING the Ones column FIRST

Science-The students will be inquiring into animal classifications and different habitats.

REMINDERS
DONATIONS - Moving?  Cleaning out?  Community Service Club is collecting used toys in good condition to take with them on their monthly visits to Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos orphanage.  Toys can be dropped off in Mrs. Agurcia's room (Rm. 7, Secondary Building)

EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY LUNCHEON – The Cafeteria will be hosting a luncheon for parents and students this Friday, May 23. The ordering slips were sent home last week! Let’s support our school cafeteria by ordering lunch and having parents come and eat with their child(ren). Please send the orders in as soon as possible!

END OF THE YEAR REPORT CARDS AND MAP REPORTS – We would like all our parents to know that the end of the year Report Cards and final MAP reports will be distributed on Friday, June 13_ as stated in our school calendar.

DISCOVERY ZONE – Our Summer camp is back! Join us and allow your children to have a fun-filled three weeks at the beginning of their summer. Spread the word among family and friends and get special discounts!
