Week 30
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!
I want to thank everyone for
their support last week; the children trulyenjoyed celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Week.
They enjoyed learning about Dr.Seuss’ life, reading many of his books and
making yummy snacks!!
As part of our money unit grade
1 will be creating a “Grade 1 Shop”. The students will be given a set amount of
money and they can buy things. In order for this activity to be a success we
need trinkets for our 'Grade 1 Shop'. If you happen to have left over prizes
from birthday goody bags and/or toys from fast food kids' meals etc. I would
very much appreciate it if you could donate them to our shop.
This Week We will be inquiring
into the following:
Language Arts
Phonics- This
week's words are boy, following, came, want, and show. Your child will be
learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and
activities.
Reading-We
will be continuing our Fairy Tale Unit this week. Your child will be reading
the Shoemaker and the Elves
retold by Sue Argeno. The students will be describing main events, characters
and setting. They will also be comparing it the other fairy tales read in class
and filling in the fairy tale elements chart.The students will also begin to
rehearse for a fairy tale play which we will be presenting next w
Writing- Your
child will be writing his/her own fairy tale. The students will work their way
through the writing process in order to create their fairy tale.
Math- We
will be finishing up our money unit this week by celebrating with our “Grade 1
Shop”. Your child will be expected to
count coins and decide whether he/ she needs change. We will also begin Chapter
6 Time.
Social Studies-The
class will be examining physical and manmade elements that make up different communities.
The class will begin a creating 3-D community; if you have any empty medicine
boxes, small food boxes please send them in.

EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY READ-A-THON – This is week two of the
Early Childhood and Elementary READ – A – THON for grades K-5. Please remind
your child(ren) to read as much as they can, and to record their books in the
Reading Log that was provided. Please help us by encouraging your
child to read at home every day!

LAST CHANCE TO ORDER YEARBOOK PICTURES - If you are
interested and have not yet sent the order form for the yearbook pictures,
please remember that Tuesday, March 11 is the last day to place them.
Make sure to send your form back with the exact amount of money or a check.
CHOIR MEETING – There will be a
Choir meeting on Monday, March 31 at 3:15 p.m. in the school library. Important
information will be discussed in this meeting about the upcoming trip to New
York City. At least one parent for each child who is going on the trip
must attend!
THIRD GRADE MAYAN DRAMA - Come travel back
in time with us! The third graders will be performing a drama to demonstrate
what they have learned about the various contrasting aspects of Mayan culture
to modern day. Please join us on Friday, March 14th. The schedule is listed
below. Parents and other teachers are also welcome to stop by and watch.

CHRONICLES OF DISCOVERY SCHOOL - Each year at
Discovery School we host the event "Chronicles of Discovery,"
destined to promote literature and art developed by our students and to reward
those whose works excel in these areas. The event is organized by the students
of the AP Literature and Composition class. Throughout the award ceremony,
students conduct art exhibition, musical performance, and recitation, among
other activities. There will also be live music and refreshments for everyone
to enjoy.
We would like to invite you to Chronicles of Discovery
and help us fund it. The event is sponsored by companies and donations from
parents. Any sum of money is welcomed, and may be delivered to Mr. Fenn (high
school building, room no. 3). Thank you for helping us promote the artistic
school spirit. We hope to see you at the
event, April 25.
