February 24, 2014
I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend!

We will have early dismissal this Wednesday, February 26.Your child only needs to bring a morning snack to school. Students will go home at 11:45.

If you have not sent back your child’s progress report please do so.

This week your child will be inquiring into the following:

Language Arts

Phonics- This week's words are too, right, line, before, and much. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.

Reading- This week the classes will begin reading fairy tales. Your child will explore the characteristics of fairy tales and discuss how culture affects the way a fairy tale may be written. The class will be reading two different Little Red Riding Hoods, one from the U.S and one from China. If your child would like to bring a fairy tale to share with the class, please have him/her bring in the book this week.
If possible, we would like to keep the book for about a week. If you would prefer to have the book back the same day, please let the teacher now.

Writing- This week your child will be writing a Personal Narrative. We will go through all the steps of the writing process. At the end of the week your child will share his/ her narrative with the class.

Math- Your child will starting chapter 9, Money. The class will be examining and working with American change (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter). Your child must be able to identify the coins according to the pictures on them as well as skip count to count the total of coins. Your child would benefit from you spending some time and discussing the pictures on the coins. Also, practicing counting by 5s and 10s will help your child.

Social Studies-Your child will continue focusing on maps, and communities. Your child will be inquiring into basic components of a map, as well as finding his/her neighborhood, school, city, and country on a map. It would be helpful if your child knew the name of the neighborhood/community he/she lives in. We will also be discussing where we are located in relation to the rest of the world.
