Week 38- May 20th-24th

Dear Parents,

We hope everyone had a great weekend!
The first graders will be going on a field trip this Thursday, as well as have the 'End of the Year' party! The permission slips will be sent home Monday.
There are still 2 weeks left of MAP testing (1A will do their final MAP this Friday, and 1B will have their final MAP next Friday). Please make sure your child comes to school well rested on those days. Also, please make sure that your child comes to school with a water bottle filled with water, not only on MAP days, but everyday.
There are a number of important events coming up in the next few weeks:

  • General Assembly- Thursday, May 23rd, at 6pm in the cafeteria- Thank you to all the parents who attended that last assembly. Due to the reason that there where not enough parents to make quorum, the board had to reschedule the meeting for this Thursday. Important issues will be voted on and there will be petition available for parents to sign to put a stop to the building of the cement plant next door. It is vital that this plant be stopped!
  • Cuenta Cuentos- The Spanish department is holding a 'Story Teller Show' as a way to conclude the 'Fluency and Reading' project. This event will be held on Friday, May 31st, at 8:50am in the gym. The cost of this activity is 50Lemps. Please have your child bring the 50Lemps to Ms. Marisela  no later than Wednesday, May 29th. Parents are welcome to come for no cost.
  • Discovery Idol- The annual Discovery Idol is just around the corner. For all the new parents, this is a talent show that is held during the last week of school. Auditions will be held this Wednesday and Thursday during recess and lunch time in the music room. The talent show will only focus on singing performances, no instrumental or dance performances will be included this year.
  • DPTO Garage Sale- The annual garage sale will be held on Saturday, June 1st. If you are interested in having a table to sell your goods. Please visit the DPTO blog or email the DPTO, discoverypto@gmail.com
  • Discovery Zone 4- The summer camp starts June 10th. If you are interested in enrolling your child(ren), please pick up a form at the office or you can print one out from the school website.
If you would like more information on any of the above events, please visit the administration blog.
Last, the first graders will be hosting the annual 'Pet Museum' next week. We will provide you with more information next week, however, we hope that you and your child can start thinking about the animal that he/she will present. We do not expect any child to purchase a pet for this day. If your child does not have a pet, or has a pet, but it cannot be brought to school, we would like your child to present on an animal that he/she wishes he/she could have.

This week, your child will be inquiring into the following:

Language Arts
Phonics- Your child will be starting to review all the words taught earlier this year through various chants and activities. On Fridays, the students will be using the words they reviewed to spell new words and/or be asked to write sentences made from the words on the Word Wall.
Reading-Your child will be reading, retelling, and summarizing informational texts about an animal in preparation for 'Pet Day'.
Writing-Your child will be preparing a research organizer this week, as well as creating questions for the organizer.
