Week 34- April 22nd-26th

Dear Parents,

We hope everyone had a fun weekend!
We would like to thank all the students and parents that made it out to this year's Fun Run. It was lots of fun and a great success!
This Monday, April 22nd, is Earth Day. We ask that all students try their best to bring an eco-friendly lunch on Monday. This means that we hope to see lunches that are in containers and/or bags that can be recycled.
There will be no school for students this Wednesday, April 24th due to in-house training for all Discovery school staff.
Here are a few reminders that we hope all parents and children participate in! The annual Discovery BINGO fund raiser will be held Saturday, May 4th.  This exciting activity starts at 11:00 am with a lunch and the game starts at 1:30 pm. All funds raised will be going towards the technology for the school. Also, the Discovery summer camp starts June 10th. If you are interested in any of these please see the Monday Memo/Administration blog for more information.
Furthermore, if you forgot to order your child'd picture you may still do so by picking up a form from Ms. Carolina, our receptionist, or printing out the from the Monday Memo.
This week, your child will be inquiring into the following:

Language Arts
Phonics- This week's words are men, read, need, land, different, home, and us. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.
Reading- Your child will be inquiring into creating mental images from print by reading and creating illustrations for the Sheil Silverstein poem entitled, ' Cuttin' Kate'.
The class will also be acting out the play at the end of the week.
Writing- The class will be writing two poems this week; a poem based on Sheil Silverstein's poem, ' Hard to Please' and another poem using the 5w's.

Math- The students will be starting chapter 11 this week, Addition and Subtraction Facts up to 18. Your child will be reviewing doubles, doubles +and- 1, and adding numbers to 10. It would benefit your child to begin reviewing the doubles and facts that make 10 nightly. In this chapter we hope to teach the child how to do mental math instead of always using his/her fingers. Knowing these facts will help your child with mental math. Your child will benefit from practicing the following skills on IXL- first grade-addition-B1-B10, and B15.
