Week 8- October 1st- October 5th

Dear Parents,

We hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!
This is the last week of MAP testing. The first graders will be taking their forth and final MAP assessment on Monday, October 1st. You can help your child prepare for this assessment by having them complete some of the reading activities found in 'MAP Reading' under 'Links'.
We would like to ask you if anyone has access to an English newspaper. The students will be writing an newspaper article about themselves and we would like to show them what a newspaper article is, however, the Honduran newspapers are not the best resources due to the amount of violence found in them. If you are able to lend/give us an English newspaper please send one with your child to school.
The annual Parent Luncheon will be held Friday, October 19th. This is a day when parents can join their child for lunch. Pre-order menus will be going home soon. This is a fun day for both parents and students and we hope to see you that day!
Last, 'Book Character Day' (a.k.a Halloween) is just around the corner. We would like to remind you that your child can come to school dressed like any book character he/she chooses and will be asked to bring the book his/her character is from to school on that day. Dressing up is fun and we encourage all students to do so. We also encourage the students to work with their parents on making the costume. There are many costume ideas on the internet and this is a great opportunity for you and your child to work together and expand your child's (and yours) imagination! We have included a link about homemade Halloween costumes under the 'Links' heading.
A reminder that there will be no school Friday, October 12th and Monday, October 15th.
This week your child will inquire into the following:

Language Arts
Phonics-This week's words are will, up, other, about, and out. Your child will be learning these words, plus reviewing older ones, through various chants and activities.

Writing-Your child will be inquiring into the 'prewriting' step of writing. He/she will be learning how plan his/her writing through discussing the ideas with a partner.
