Week 35- April 16th-20th

Dear Parents,

We hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!
The first graders will be taking the MAP assessments starting the second week of May. You can practice the various MAP skills by asking our child to play the online MAP reading and math games. They can be found under the 'Links' heading.
We would like to remind all parents that Discovery will be having its annual Family Night this Friday, April 20th from 5-8P.M. This year the theme is 'Jungle Night'! You are all welcome to dress as your favorite animal or just wear a mask. This is a fun night for all filled with games and food!
This week your child will inquire into the following:

Language Arts
  • Phonics- This weeks words are meansany, old, same, and tell. The class will be reviewing these words and other Word Wall words through various words activities and chants.
  • Reading- This week your child will continue reading Mouse Soup. Your child will inquire into the problem of the story, relate the story conflict to personal experience, and identify the beginning, middle and ending of the story. You can help your child with these reading skills by asking them to identify the problem or the sequence of a story he/she reads at home. You can ask your child to tell you of a time that he/she experienced a similar problem in real life.
  • Writing- Your child will continue writing about his/her Easter break this week. Your child will be expanding his/her ideas with adjectives and be learning how to make his/her ideas more interesting.
Math- This week your child will continue exploring estimating and measurement. He/she will be estimating the lengths and heights of vairous objects and then measuring them using both inches and centimeters. The class will also start weighing objects using pounds. We are finding that many of our students are not comfortable estimating. You can help your child become a more confident estimator by asking him/her to estimate the quantity or length of things at home. Ask him/her to estimate how many candies there are in a package or the lenght of your foot  for example and then have him/her figure out the answer.

Theme- Science-Organisims- The class will examine, identify and create a magazine page on the various features plants have that help them survive in different environments.
