August 28th - September 1st

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

During the month of September the students will be participating in several activities to commemorate the Independence Day of Honduras.  We will begin the celebrations by having an assembly on the first day of September.

If you have any Honduran souvenirs, maps, coins etc. please send them in with your child so we can display them in our classroom.

I want to give a BIG thankyou to all of you who kindly contribute to buy us a refrigerator for our class. This will help to keep your child’s snack and lunch cool when they bring something that needs to be refrigerated. Please inform your child whenever he/she has something to be kept in the refrigerator. It is a good way to teach them to be responsible. I would kindly request to please avoid any type of glass containers since they can easily break and it is dangerous for your little one to carry them around by themselves.

This week, your child will inquire into the following:

Students will be reviewing all the word wall words we have studied up to this point through various activities and chants.
This week your child will be learning these five words

This week we will be reading The Giving Tree. Your child will be using illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.

We will continue working with Opinion Writing. Your child will be writing an opinion piece in which they introduce the topic they are writing about, supply a reason for the opinion and provide some sense of closure.

This week your child will be learning how to solve vertical and horizontal addition problems and solving problems by writing number sentences.

We will be learning about Honduras’ national heroes and symbols.

There are IXL skills for Math and for Language Arts. It is a wonderful way to get some extra practice at home. This week I would love for your child to do:

First grade language arts
Consonants and vowels
A.1   Sort consonants and vowels
A.2   Find the vowels in a word
