Dear Parents,

We hope you had a great weekend with your family! We are beginning a new month today, FEBRUARY.




This week your child will inquire into the following:

Language Arts

Working with Words: This week's words are:
sentence, car, think, man, good, name
Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older words through various chants and activities.


Reading:
 We will continue reading Frog and Toad All Year Round by Arnold Lobel. Students will be identifying who is telling the story in various parts in the text. Also, they will identify words and phrases in a poem that suggest feeling or appeal to the senses.




Writing:  
Students will ask and answer questions about key details from information presented through media to determine or clarify meaning of unknown words.




Math:  
We will begin Chapter 6, place value and data, counting up to 120 and making numbers using tens and ones.
The class will be practicing skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, up to 120. Please help your child with skip counting by asking them to count nightly. Your child is expected to be able to count to 120 forward and back by 1s.

Science:
We will continue investigating solids, and liquids. Students are very excited about this unit. If you have any books about this topic and want to share them, please feel free to send them with your child. We would really appreciate it!

BRICKS4KIDS – As an after school activity for our younger students, the school has been in contact with Bricks4 kidz to offer six one-hour, Friday- afternoon sessions beginning on Friday, January 30 from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.. Following the We learn-We build-We play approach, Bricks 4 Kidz after-school classes build on the universal popularity of LEGO® bricks to deliver a high quality of educational play.  For more information on its educational value, visit http://www.bricks4kidz.com/ http://www.bricks4kidz.com/   Bricks4kidz will be here on Friday, January 23 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. if you want to register your child (ren).


CAYOS COCHINOS - As part of TES, Trabajo Educativo Social, the 12th graders will be going to Cayos Cochinos  on March 2 to 7  to assist the community of Cayo Mayor. The Alfonso Lacayo Public School is in need of school materials, so the Senior class has decided to conduct a school supply drive. They would appreciate any and all donations but wish to ask the following classes that each student contributes the following:
Nursery and Kinder – I pack of 12 colored markers
1st and 2nd – 2 pencil sharpeners
3rd and 4th – 1 pack of 12 colored pencils
5th – 2 scissors
6th to 8th – 2 normal sized composition notebooks
9th – 1 blue, black and red pen
10th – 1 pack of 12 pencils and two erasers
11th – 4 UHU glue sticks

WE WOULD ALSO GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY SPANISH BOOK DONATIONS. Please help not only the Senior class, but also the inhabitants of Cayo Mayor.

100 Days of School projects were beautiful!!!! We hope you had a great time making them with your kids.
SUNSHINE SCHOOL FRIENDLY SPORTS ACTIVITIES – On Wednesday, January 28 our students will receive the visit of Sunshine School. Our Grades K-2 will be participating in games and races, and grades 3-8 will be playing friendly soccer matches.
Please have  your child wear the uniform used for Villa Olimpica matches, blue short and white t-shirt with the school logo.

Reading-The class will continue with Frog and Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel. We will be answering questions about key details in the text, and using illustrations and details in the story to describe its characters.
You can help your child with these skills by asking him/her to retell a page of a story or the entire story in his/her own words after reading it.



Writing- Students will learn to use adjectives. Also, they will write an informative piece in which they name a topic, supply facts and provide a sense of closure.




Math-
We will finish Chapter 5, adding and subtracting facts within 20 and demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
The class will be practicing skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, up to 120. Please help your child with skip counting by asking them to count nightly. Your child is expected to be able to count to 120 forward and back by 1s.


Science-
This week's science class will be spent investigating solids, and liquids. Students are very excited about this unit. If you have any books about this topic and want to share them, please feel free to send them with your child. We would really appreciate it!

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS - Scholastic Book Club leaflets are out. This is an optional activity offered by the school, because we know you want to motivate your child to read at home.  With your purchase, our library will accumulate points to redeem more books for the benefit of your children in our school.  The due date to purchase the books online is Jan.30. The books will arrive to the school in one single delivery, and we will distribute them to the students according to their orders, approximately three weeks after the purchase due date.

BRICKS4KIDS – As an after school activity for our younger students, the school has been in contact with Bricks4 kidz to offer six one-hour, Friday- afternoon sessions beginning on Friday, January 30 from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.. DPTO FUN RUN - The DPTO has been working hard to organize the annual Fun Run, which will be held this year on Saturday, January 30. The activity will begin with registration of our runners at 8:30 a.m., followed by the run at 9:00 a.m and the traditional pancake breakfast at around 9:45 a,m. Pledge forms were distributed with the report cards last Friday. The DPTO would appreciate parents who are interested in helping with the preparation and distribution of the breakfast, or want to donate pastries for this day, to contact Ms. Karla Soto (dsmarketing@discoveryschool.edu.hn) or Ms. Cristiana to see what they can help with.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEDNESDAY – This Wednesday is an early dismissal day for our students (11:45 a.m.) We will follow A.M. Schedule. Our staff will meet at 1:00 p.m. in the Library, and work the rest of the afternoon in the AdvancED accreditation process.

100 Days of School is just around the corner. Remember that Thursday, January 22nd is the deadline for your 100 Day of School project. We will be having our presentations on Friday, January 23rd.

Reading-The class will begin reading Frog and Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel. We will be identifying the problem of the story, continue exploring summarizing, retelling a text in their own words, and answering questions about key details in the text. You can help your child with these skills by asking him/her to retell a page of a story or the entire story in his/her own words after reading it.


Writing- Students will recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. Also we will be working with adjectives.




Math-

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend!

Second quarter report cards will be going home this Friday, January 16th. Parent/teacher conferences will be held the same day in the afternoon. This will be a half day for students. Conferences will be held on a need to see basis. If you would like to schedule a conference please let me know.

Please note that Monday, January 19th, is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there is no school on that day.

SECOND QUARTER REPORT CARDS AND CONFERENCES – This Friday, January 16 has been set aside for the distribution of the report cards for the second quarter. This day is an early dismissal day for students, and they will be released at 11:45 a.m. We will follow the PM Schedule (which begins with period four). Conferences for this day are on a need basis. Teachers will send notices for the conferences on Monday, January 12. If you did not receive a notice, but would like to meet with a teacher, please do not hesitate to contact the school to set an appointment for the afternoon of that day. 

EPSON TRAINING – The administration team has decided to seize the opportunity being offered by Epson with the visit of a specialized trainer being flown to Tegucigalpa. Therefore, next Wednesday, January 14 will be an early dismissal day for students, and we will follow the AM schedule (period’s one through four). The training will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the computer lab.

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL: It is hard to believe that the 100th day of school is quickly approaching and so it is time for us to start planning the festivities. This exciting day is going to be on Friday, January 23rd. For this, we would like for you to help your child come up with a “100 day of school project.” For this, they need to build up a project with 100 items. They can display their project in any creative way. They can use any item. Please avoid edible items. This project should be in school on THURSDAY, JANUARY 22nd. These projects will be displayed as a 100th day Museum for other children to come and visit. Some items that you may want to use are pennies, cotton balls, q-tips, dot stickers, legos, popsicle sticks, wiggly eyes, buttons, etc. The following pictures are just examples of what you can come up with:

Dear Parents,


We hope your holidays were filled with joy and happiness!
It is wonderful to see everyone back at school! Please remind your child that he/she is returning back to school and that means that he/she must turn his/her 'thinking switch' on; follow classroom and school rules and bring his/her folder to school each day with his/her completed homework. We  also know how hard it is to wake up early again after a long holiday so, we  would like to remind all parents the importance of having your child go to sleep earlier on school days and having a healthy breakfast before school each morning.

Working with Words- Your child will be reviewing all the Word Wall Words this week. There will be no spelling challenge this week.





Reading-The class will be reading The Little Engine That Could by Watty  Piper. We will be identifying the main idea of the story. We will discuss New Year's resolutions. The class will also begin learning about Martin Luther King.





Writing- Your child will be writing a personal narrative titled My Christmas Vacation. We will begin to talk about ideas and organization in their writing. This is part of the 6+1 writing Traits.





Math- Students will solve subtraction and addition problems using the past strategies. Math centers will be available to practice using different manipulative.



Science- The class will be inquiring into Solids and Liquids for the next few weeks. The students will be comparing various solids this week and experimenting with them identifying which solids can roll and which need to be stacked.

·       Early Dismissal and Conferences Friday, January 16th
