October 27-29, 2014



Dear Parents,

I Hope you enjoyed your weekend!
 It was a pleasure meeting with all of you at conference time. If you have any questions or comments about your child’s report card or MAP results please contact me so we can meet.



There is no school on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st. Classes resume on Monday, November 3.



All the parents are invited to stay and partake in the annual U.N. Day celebrations here at school starting at 8:30a.m. on Wednesday. This is a very fun and exciting day for all, where parents and children get together to learn about new cultures. The grade 1 students displayed informational texts about what they learned about the United Nations. They are displayed in the office, make sure to stop by and check it out. This is also a half day. All students will be going home at 11:45 a.m.



'Book Character Day' is not too far away. I would like to remind you that your child will be encouraged to come dressed like his/her favorite book character on Tuesday, October 28th. Your child must also be ready to present his/her costume and book to the class. Lower elementary will be having a costume parade starting at 8:15.
Please, remember to send your candies for the trick or treating.





If you would like to help, you can send these items in with your child.



This week your child will be inquiring into the following:

Language Arts
Word Wall- This week your child will be reviewing all the Word Wall words with various chants and activities.




Reading- We will introduce the story ROOM ON THE BROOM, by Julia Donaldson. It is a story about a witch and her cat that are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick. Suddenly, the wind picks up and blows away the witch's hat, then her bow, and then her wand!  Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom.  But is there room on the broom for so many friends?  And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?
Writing- Students will be retelling the story in a sequencing chart. They will also work on writing opinion piece about one of the characters in the story.

Math- Students will be reviewing addition and subtraction, counting on, and doubles. Centers will be displayed to review all these skills.

Dear Parents,

There will be no school this coming Friday, October 24th, since we are having our Student Led Conferences. In your child’s folder this MONDAY, Oct. 20th, I will be sending you the time to come to your conference. If you have any questions or problems, please contact me, so we can meet at another time.

You can choose any hard or soft candy, chocolates, gummy bears, lollipops etc. but they need to come INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED.

Reading- Your child will continue learning how to retell information in his/her own words. We are learning about the U.N,
UNICEF, UNESCO, and the WFP. Students are really excited with all this information.

Writing- Your child will be writing an informational piece about the United Nations.



Math- This week your child will begin Chapter 3 and learn about addition strategies such as counting on, adding doubles, and adding in any order.

Vocabulary: Count on, doubles, doubles +1, doubles -1, make a ten.

FLU SEASON AND VACCINATION - Flu season is here. For any families who are interested, we have arranged with Mandofer (pharmaceutical company) to come to the school campus and give flu vaccines on October 24 when parents and students will be here for conferences.
        Where:  Discovery School Gym
      When:   Friday, October 24, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
        Cost:     L.238 for each vaccine
        Payment: Cash and credit cards only, at time of vaccination
        Vaccine:  Fluarix, manufactured by Glaxo-SmithKline (Descriptive literature for the vaccine is attached in Spanish.)
SENIORS’ BAKE SALE - The Senior class will have a bake sale on Wednesday, October 22 during snack and lunch recess.
SCHOOL'S POLO SHIRTS - The Senior class will be selling a limited edition of the school's polo shirts. The cost will be Lps. 250. Shirts will be available on Friday, October 24 during Conferences. All funds will be towards their mandatory Social Work. Do not miss this great opportunity to buy your shirt at a great price. There will be limited availability of sizes; therefore shirts will be sold on a first come first serve basis.

Dear Parents,

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Student Led Conferences will be held on Friday October 24th. There is no school for students on that day. You will be allotted a time during which you and your child can come to class together. During this time, your child will show you around the classroom and explain what he/she has been learning. It is also the time you will receive your child's report card and when the teacher will discuss with you any concerns that she might have regarding your child's learning. There will be a slip going home with the siblings of other Discovery students so the teachers do not schedule meeting at the same time. All the other children will get a slip telling the parents what time the conference will be. If the time is inconvenient for you, please let the teacher know.

Language Arts
WWW- Students will chant out, write, and define grade 1 words. The words for this week are:

Number, no, way, could, people, house.

Reading- Students will use illustrations and details in a text to describe its main ideas. We will be using a poem related to Christopher Columbus called “1492” to carry out this activity.




Writing- Students will write informative texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts, and provide a sense of closure.




Math- This week students will be working with subtraction in any order, using pictures and subtraction to compare, subtract all or 0, subtraction less than 10, and taking apart numbers up to 10.  You can help your child get ready for this chapter by playing some of the online math activities found under the 'Links' heading.

KUDOS FOR CREATIVE INSTRUCTION – This Wednesday, October 15 Ms. Marisela and Ms. Norma will be sharing the digital stories that the third, fourth and fifth graders created on Storybird.com. The final products will be shared with parents during our Student Led Conferences.

SCIENCE FAIR- Our Early Childhood and Elementary have begun working on their Science Fair projects. Grades K-2 will work on whole group projects with their teacher, grades 3-5 will complete a packet according to established deadlines, and will work on this project at home. Elementary parents need to keep in mind the deadlines that are established for each step of the project.

SENIORS BAKE SALE - The Senior class will have a bake sale on Wednesday, October 22 during snack and lunch recess.

We hope everyone had a fun and exciting weekend!

'Book Character Day' is not too far away. We would like to remind you that your child will be encouraged to come dressed like his/her favorite book character on Wednesday, October 29th and be ready to present his/her costume and book to the class. There are a few links to websites that show how to make homemade costumes under the 'Links' heading for the parents who are thinking of making a costume.

 DONATIONS NEEDED: We are working on making fun and challenging math centers. We would like to ask you to please send with your child one box of large Ziploc bags and one small. Thanks for your cooperation.



Your child will inquire into the following this week:

Language Arts



WWW- This week’s words are more, see, go, write, because and two. Your child will be learning these words and reviewing older ones with various chants and activities. There will be a 'Spelling Challenge' on Friday, October 10th.




Reading- We will wrap up Nate the Great with a Scavenger hunt and eat pancakes. Students will also be learning about nonfiction texts by reading information about Christopher Columbus.
Writing- Students will be inquiring into pre-writing by exploring how to plan his/her writing. He/she will also write a short informative piece on Christopher Columbus.




Math- Students will continue working on Chapter 2 this week, 'Subtraction’. He/she will be inquiring into counting on, using part, part, whole, and finding differences.  These are some of the words that students need to be familiar with:
Vocabulary: Compare, difference, fewer, minus, more, subtract, subtraction sentence, take apart, take from, add to, , part , part whole, put together.



Social Studies:  Students will have the opportunity to learn about the United Nations. We will be listen to some guest speakers discuss their nationality and traditions. A special celebration for this day will be held in school on Oct. 29th.

IMPORTANT SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

HOLIDAY – We want to remind parents that our October Holidays will be on Thursday and Friday, October 30 and 31.
